That felt – which is something as simple as compressed wool – can be shaped into such an infinity of shapes, and appear in a full range of colours, created from both synthetic and organic colors will create a refreshing exhibition experience.

Norwegian Feltmakers has a history filled with milestones and colorful encounters and is an association of professional actors. They are active throughout the country, with a varied expression, but share a commitment to preserving the ancient textile craft of felting, while at the same time wanting to renew and further develop techniques and designs adapted to our time.

The word "tove" (to felt) comes from the Finnish word "houpa", while felt comes from the European words felt and filz.

When felt makers talk about felting, they mean the entire process from laying out the wool to the finished felted work. Felting is wool fibers that wander, that intertwine and hook into each other and the more you work with wool, the more the fibers will tangle together. Moisture and movement are the most important factors, while heat and cold in turn and soap accelerate the process. In the end, there is no air left between the fibers, and it has become a textile work.

To felt is to take control of the shrinkage process and shape the wool into what you want to create. The possibilities of wool are fascinating and it is a challenge to shape the wool into what you want, what comes out of imagination, thoughts and ideas.

There has been a revolution in felting over the past 30 years, and Norway has excellent felt makers who hold courses both at home and abroad. At Tømmerlåven you will encounter a wide range of creations made from felt, both for decoration, utility, art and decoration.
