Ten tips for families with children at Blaafarveværket and Koboltgruvene!
A visit with us means experiences for the whole family. We know what it's like to be travelling with impatient children in the car. So it's fitting that several of our popular activities for children are available when you're parked. Here are ten tips for families with children this summer!
Family-friendly activities at Blaafarveværket
The Children's Farm at Blaafarveværket is a very popular attraction for young and old alike. Get up close to horses, goats, pigs, rabbits and other animals. Children's Farm has free admission and is located right next to the car park when you arrive. More about the Children's Farm here!
Barnas Buldrehule at Blaafarveværket is a cave in the mountains that is equipped with climbing elements for children. Here you can test your balance and coordination in a low-threshold course. The children's bouldering cave is free to use and is designed so that no safety equipment is required. More about Barnas Buldrehule here!
A playground is always fun for the little ones and a nice break for the adults. At Blaafarveværket, the playground is located outside the Children's Boulder Cave, in the heart of the museum. We also have a sandpit at Haugfoss and at Koboltgruvene there is a sandpit, seesaw, stilts and more.
Fleet Node is located on Simoa and you, the passengers, are the engine! The raft is secured with ropes on both sides of the river and you pull yourself across. Get some strong adults along for the ride and don't forget your life jacket!
What kids love most in the Cobalt Mines
The children's mine tour in the Cobalt Mines is perfect for families with children! Every day this summer, the whole family can join a mine tour where the children are in focus. Experience both underground passages and large open-cast mines on the 1-hour tour, which is specially adapted for children aged 4-10. Read more about Barnas Gruvetur and buy your ticket here!
For slightly older children, the Historical Mine Tour is also very exciting. Highlights include walking across the "floating" glass floor and crossing the underground suspension bridge. Read more about Historic Mine Tour and buy tickets here!
For the older kids (and teenagers), we have a really cool mine tour called Mining safari. It has an 8-year age limit and takes a full 3 hours. You get to try both the glass floor and the suspension bridge as on a historic mine tour, but you go even further into the Cobalt Mines and come out again somewhere else. On this tour, you have to use some long stairs and ladders inside the mountain because the exit is a full 80 metres lower than the entrance!
The Kittelsen Museum at Koboltgruvene is an experience for children and adults of all ages. Kittelsen created the troll as we know it today, and here you can experience his fun, exciting and sometimes scary characters, paintings and drawings. Practical tips for a successful day
The children's labyrinth is an exciting little walk in the dark under the barn bridge at Nyfossum. The blue light guides you through the corridors, and luckily everyone gets out again. Outside, you can test your throwing arm with good old-fashioned pea bags. In the timber barn there is an exciting exhibition with, among other things, wooden sculptures! Entrance to Nyfossum is free for everyone throughout the summer!
If you want to do EVERYTHING with us, it can get a bit hectic with just one day. In that case, we have some great places to stay nearby, so you can experience more the next day! At Koboltgruvene you'll find DNT's Koboltkoia Tourist Cabin. Between Blaafarveværket and Koboltgruvene you will find the tough Stolpehyttaand just 5 minutes away from Blaafarveværket is Tretopphytta! Exciting places to stay when travelling with the family.
Food is a must wherever you are! We have three eateries with menus where everyone can find something they like. We're famous for our large, freshly baked waffles and pancakes with ice cream and homemade jam, but of course we have both lunch and dinner dishes. And if you want to bring your own food, you're welcome to enjoy it in our large park areas.
Extra summer activities for families with children at Blaafarveværket and Koboltgruvene
At the Mining Yard children of all ages can walk Kobald's task path. Combine a day in unique surroundings with a great activity for the whole family. Find all the posts around the houses, learn about the Cobalt Works and the mines and solve all the puzzles. Participation prizes for all children. An extra nice main prize is also drawn every month.
Skuterudåsen's waterways is a great trip for the whole family. We have set out 6 stamping posts along the route. Find all the stamps as you travel back in time to where it all started in 1772, experience the fantastic opencast mines and move through a unique mining landscape. Prize for children who deliver a completed stamp card.
This year's anniversary exhibition for families and children. Highlights of Norwegian art can be experienced at Blaafarveværket this summer. Well-known artists such as Edvard Munch, Harriet Backer, Frits Thaulow and many more are represented in the exhibition, where all images are borrowed from KODE Bergen's collections. The exhibition is free for children under the age of 15.
