A European townhouse at Modum

Nyfossum was the home of the Blaafarveværk's technical director. The mansion is surrounded by a beautiful garden - with herbs, roses, gazebo and carp pond. At Direktørboligen Nyfossum you can enjoy art and history in green surroundings.

Nyfossum was built with the solid simplicity of the Empire style for one of Europe's leading dye manufacturers in the 1820s: Friedrich Roscher. He came to Blaafarveværket in 1822 and eventually moved into the building that later housed his position as technical director.

The mansion has been restored and furnished as it might have looked in Roscher's time and is surrounded by a large garden with herbs, roses, gazebo and carp pond.

The cobalt pigment is literally in the walls here. We made the paint ourselves using old recipes and real pigments. The glue colours in the light blue rooms are made with real cobalt from Blaafarveværket.

The house and garden are filled with activities throughout the summer. Here, you can also visit the Stabbursbutikken, which offers Blaafarveværkets products, garden equipment, herbs and ceramics. You'll also find coffee and cakes, and in the beautiful garden you can wander along the old-fashioned shrub roses, the beautiful gazebo and the duck pond. Benches and tables invite you to picnic in the green. 

Today, the home is also a Ida Lorentzen Museum. Wandering through living rooms, bedrooms and children's rooms, you'll discover Ida Lorentzen's gorgeous photos with motifs from the cool elegance of the house.

The wooden walls of the old barn provide a very special atmosphere for our annual exhibitions. Artists such as Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Torvald Moseid, Synnøve Anker Aurdal, Aslaug M. Juliussen, Sidsel Colbiørnsen, Elisabeth Werp, Magne Furuholmen and oriental carpet art have adorned the walls. It's always exciting to see how the artists utilise the rustic rooms from year to year!
