What is it that actually makes a person sing?
Sometimes it's joy. Sometimes it's sorrow. Sometimes it's the only way to stay afloat.
In the concert Singing for the Sake of My Soul Monica Tomescu-Rohde and Siv Irén Misund invite the audience into a musical landscape where the voice becomes prayer, comfort and resistance. Through music written by black composers and composers who have stood outside the traditional musical canon, the duo explores how song can carry people through dark times - and at the same time bring them closer to themselves.
The concert moves between spirituals, art songs and musical expressions with roots in church, folk tradition and classical music. The intimate meets the powerful, the vulnerable meets the hopeful. The music tells stories of longing, faith, freedom and identity - but also of beauty, warmth and human strength.
The programme includes songs and piano music by Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Undine Smith Moore and Errollyn Wallen - from spirituals and art songs in the central romantic tradition to contemporary works from the UK.
The Tenth Voice is an artist duo consisting of pianist Monica Tomescu-Rohde and mezzo-soprano Siv Iren Misund. Together, they explore music's ability to carry what has long been unsaid - voices that have been ignored, forgotten or silenced in history. With a particular focus on the music of black composers and women, the duo creates interdisciplinary productions that weave together the personal and the political, the sacred and the sensual.
The name refers to the “tenth voice” - the voice that is missing in the public sphere, but which lives on in memory, music and resistance. Through concerts, performances and stories, The Tenth Voice restores the connection between soul and expression, between history and the present.
