Guided tour of the 1772 cobalt discovery
Join a free tour with our guide to the Nord mines and the cobalt discovery in 1772.
We follow the huge open-cast mines up to Nordgruvene. Here the traces of the very first operations at the Cobalt Mines have been brought to light and become a fantastic hiking area. At Nordgruvene, we take a round trip to Nordgruvetjern with its beautiful dam and follow the road via the reconstructed crushed stone works from the first period of operation in the 1770s.
The tour starts at Gruvetråkka outside Gruvekroa and returns from Nordgruvene via Koboltkoia (DNT's tourist hut). The hike is 2.2 km in total. The terrain is hilly and normally requires good physical fitness. The difference in altitude from Gruvetråkka to the highest point on the hike is 80 metres.
The tour starts at 14.30 and finishes at approx. 16.00. No registration required. Meeting point at Gruvekroa at Koboltgruvene. Address: Malmveien 620, 3370 Vikersund.
